CONTAINER

Container is Nashville, TN resident Ren Schofield's experimental excursion into the world of beat oriented electronic music. Container’s first full length album was just released on the Cleveland/Vienna based label Spectrum Spools and has triggered response such as: "like Surgeon on DMT covering Cybotron jams with a bubble machine", and "Container has created a twisted, time-warping and insolently fucked lo-fi techno record that has to rank among the very best full-length statements of 2011."

UNICORN HARD-ON

For many years now Unicorn Hard-On has been infiltrating the American and European underground with her unusual style of animal inspired electronic dance music. Incorporating elements of techno, industrial, noise, and synth pop, four sequenced Electribes are used to create eerie backgrounds of tonal interference, glittering splashes of synth, and gradually multiplying pulsing beats, forming a wall of mutated dance madness.

Two kids who hooked up their electronic wizardry are challenging
the boundaries of electronic dance music. In form of an organic, constantly shapeshifting pulse, played on a pile of electronics and drum machines, Laser Poodle is a sweet late night stroboscopic trip. Laser Poodle is Amsterdam based Fyoelk (Germany) and Yellow Galactic Human (Denmark).

MOEMLIEN

is the solo project of Hannah from Amsterdam. She is exploring the many sides of the cassette tape as a medium for capturing and manipulation of sounds. Fieldrecordings and melodic sequences are layered into uplifting sonic spheres of the extraterrestrial kind, with a warm and open feel to them. In her adventures she uses electronics, toy keyboards, violoncello, various acoustic objects & instruments and voice. Hannah is also playing in the free music group Cotopaxi (with Fyoelk), who have toured in Europe and the United States. They are organizing concerts in Amsterdam as the "Hallo Gallo" collective.

Save Silent Barn

New York is a vanishing city—no street or block looks the same year to year. Geographically and culturally, Silent Barn has always been “out there.” Located in the Ridgewood section of Queens, the live/work/performance space was founded in 2004 by artists and musicians on that now all-too-familiar eastward flee from Williamsburg and it’s homogenization.

The story of the artist, the developer, the well-heeled culture-vampire, young professionals, and the displacement of the working class is a tale that has been told but Silent Barn always felt different. Located on a stretch of nothing in the middle of nowhere, Silent Barn’s shelf-life as a haven for the presentation of the unmarketable in art and music seemed longer than most. The perpetually sharpie-marked among us figured as long as people dedicated to the fringe ran it and the sidewalk was kept clear, the space would continue flourish. Over the course of it’s seven years of existence, Silent Barn has nourished the careers of notable NYC acts like Vivian Girls, Woods, Liturgy, Real Estate and scores of lesser-known artists across the spectrum of the modern underground from around the world. Most recently, it was home to the massively successful Ende Tymes Noise festival.

This past weekend, Silent Barn was hobbled by a blast of cold urban reality — the venue was robbed and ransacked. Thieves walked out of Silent Barn’s doors onto Wyckoff Avenue carrying thousands of dollars of audio equipment, cash, and artwork and sent an already tight-knit community into shock. Silent Barn’s Facebook page has been lit up with well wishes and words of solidarity from fans and musicians from around the world. Benefit shows and compilations are in the works to help keep Silent Barn operating and its principals have just launched a Kickstarter to help defray the costs of replacing that which is replaceable and to make necessary renovations to keep the space safe and viable for years to come.

Thanks to my friend C. Spencer Yeh, we had the extraordinary pleasure of welcoming Ju Suk Reet Meate and Jackie Oblivia on to this past Sunday's Just Music program. Meate helped form the legendary non-music ensemble Smegma in the early 70's and Jackie joined just in time for the classic Smegma LP Pigs For Lepers. While Smegma is still a band(the new record, Mirage, on Important Records is AMAZING), Jackie and Ju Suk have been perfroming as The Tenses. Ju Suk explains The Tenses as a "smaller, more focused version of Smegma." They played an amazing set live in the studio and we spent the ensuing 45 minutes picking their brains about the origins of the LAFMS, Portland's punk rock scene in the 70's, and a bunch of random shit. We could have listened to their stories for hours...

Richard Pinhas

Composer, guitarist and electronics innovator Richard Pinhas is recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians. A pivotal figure in the international development of electronic rock music, Pinhas' stature in France is analogous to Tangerine Dream's in Germany: the father figure of an entire musical movement. The pioneering, aggressive music produced by his band Heldon during the 1970s, fusing electronics, guitar and rock, heralded the industrial and techno to come and remains today vital and unsurpassed. Pinhas has been ceaselessly innovative in a career spanning more than 30 years, and recently has been exploring areas of the international ‘noise’ scene. His newest release, Metal/Crystal shows him working with two of that scene’s highest profile artists: Merzbow and Wolf Eyes.

Mountains

Mountains is Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp, two sonic explorers whose long history, shared philosophies, and love of sculpting sound, has resulted in some of the most densely layered and blissful music crafted in recent memory. The duo is known for obscuring the boundaries between acoustic instrumentation and electronics. Their newest Thrill Jockey release Air Museum blurs the lines between acoustic and electronic music even more without sacrificing melody or the delicacy of their sound. It is an album of firsts. It was the first album that the acoustic instruments were not processed via a computer. Instead, the processing of the instrumentation (acoustic and electric guitar, cello, accordion, piano, bass etc.) was done using a variety of pedals, modular synths, and other analog techniques. While acoustic instruments were used extensively, the album manifests itself sonically as their most “electronic” record yet.

Forma

FORMA's primary influence is at the intersection of electronic based Krautrock (Kraftwerk, Cluster,Harmonia, Popol Vuh) and the explosion of late 70's early 80's underground synthesizer music grouped broadly under the umbrella term Minimal Synth. They create repetitive yet complex evolving structures of sound, producing a wholly improvised music driven by live drum machine programming, synchronized analog synths and spacious melodies. On their eponymous debut LP, the Brooklyn-based electronics trio merges the melodic flow and primitive rhythms of their motorik predecessors with the hypnotic drones of Minimalism, creating an intricate work both addicting and rewarding with repeat listens. Like many of the LP's eleven tracks, the churning and relentless FORMA237B draws its energy from a precarious equilibrium between structural rigidity and free improvisation, a dynamic at the heart of FORMA’s universe. With lush, distant soundscapes as interludes between these peaks, FORMA’s inaugural full-length is a harmonious and expansive expression of the enduring power of Kosmische musik.

Carlos Giffoni

Carlos Giffoni is a Venezuelan electronic musician who resides in the New York City area since the year 2000. Currently using modular synthesizers, hand made custom instruments, and various types of analog and digital synthesis in the composition of electronic music pieces, as well as improvising live with local and international musicians. His recent solo work has focused in live analog synthesizer pieces that put his style in a line with early techno and cosmic electronic music while maintaining the harsher edge of his previous noise works. He founded the No Fun Productions label, which has released works by Noveller, Onehatrix Point Never and legendary Japanese noise group C.C.C.C.

Ende Tymes Festival is a 3 day festival dedicated to DIY experimental music and video art. Michael Morley on East Village Radio

Casey and I welcomed Michael Morley (The Dead C,Gate) on the Just Music program on April 3rd, 2011. Michael did a live performance using his laptop and a synthesizer program for a handheld Nintendo system. The set was really incredible. Michael followed that up with a raw demo for his next Gate LP; a beat driven piece of warped techno that will surely send long-time Gate fans into a spiral of confusion. Razxca

Razxca is the one man analog noise project of Mikhail Gusenkov. In email exchanges with Gusenkov, he informed me that he maintains an anti-consumerist lifestyle and chooses to live simply;wearing 2 dollar pants in a self sustained eco-village outside of Moscow refraining from drugs and alcohol. Over a year a ago he sold most of his music collection and some musical instruments including a djimbe. He cites Iannis Xenakis as an influence on his work along with dub and that he seeks to "create original dub vibes in noise wall." In his pursuit of making"rhythms without beats" Gusenkov utilizes
tape loops and "fail DATA",which he explained as using a trial version of Cool Edit pro and "playing" files not associated with sound and recording them to tape.

Gusenkov has amassed over 160 releases since 1997 with most of them being self released and always free of charge. Gusenkov sites the American net label Proc-Records as his biggest proponent, compares his music to Swedish project Blod, and claims association with the Low Bit aesthetic movement.

The Ukrainian label Genetic Trance, whose stated mission is the dissemination of free information,recently anthologized the majority of Razxca's output on Works(2000-2010)and is available for free. At over three gigs, Works is impenetrable and I defy even the most brain-rotted static fiend to make it through the first two tracks which combine to make up the piece "42 Hours of Noise Kundalini." That title is no exaggeration, by the way. The brazen and self-indulgent scope of a piece that would take a work week to get through both horrifies and fosters a sneering respect for an artist who truly has no designs of gaining commercial appeal. Works contains shorter pieces as well; varying from sparse minimalist sketches to fully formed noise blowouts reminiscent of Japanese noise outfits such as C.C.C.C. For the uninitiated, I suggest checking out his split release with Italian artist Dust Cult. At a very palatable 7 minutes, "Uo" is a superb realization of intricately layered psychedelic noise that does indeed summon rhythmic ghosts. Razxca's N-Series cassette is another fine entry point to the work of this intriguing Russian artist.

Wally Shoup / C. Spencer Yeh / Ben Hall Trio

Seattle-based alto saxophonist Wally Shoup has been involved in
improvised music as a creative artist, writer, organizer, and DJ since
the mid-1970s. His first album, 1981’s independently released
Scree-Run Waltz, was a duo with percussionist Ross Rabin that showed
Shoup creating a unique language equally influenced by European
improvisation and Southern R&B, blues, and soul musics. Over the
course of his long and varied career he’s worked with Davey Williams,
La Donna Smith, Evan Parker, Paul Flaherty, Jack Wright, Thurston
Moore, Chris Corsano, Nels Cline, Reuben Radding, and many others. He
continues to help organize Seattle’s Improvised Music Festival as he
has since 1985, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010 making
it the country’s longest running US event of its kind. In addition to
his diverse involvement in improvised music, his paintings have been
displayed in several galleries and appear on many of his album covers.

C. Spencer Yeh was born in Taipei, Taiwan 1975, and now lives in
Cincinnati, Ohio. He is active both as a solo and collaborative
artist, as well as with his primary project, Burning Star Core. As an
improviser, Yeh is focused on developing a personal vocabulary using
violin, voice, and electronics. As a sound artist/composer, Yeh
explores with all aspects surrounding a work, aurally and physically,
as elements key to the cumulative experience. He is concerned not only
with the sensual aspects of 'sound organization,' but the gestural
qualities as well. Yeh has collaborated with a deep and ever-growing
list of artists and groups, including Tony Conrad, New Humans with
Vito Acconci, Evan Parker, Thurston Moore, Amy Granat with Jutta
Koether, Okkyung Lee, Justin Lieberman, John Wiese, Don Dietrich, Nate
Wooley, Chris Corsano, Prurient, and Jandek.

R.I.P. Captain Beefheart: January 15, 1941 - December 17, 2010

So today Captain Beefheart died. Maybe he died thirty years ago when Don Van Vliet said so. After demolishing all accepted norms and practices for "rock" music Van Vliet walked away. He was an artist and maybe he said all he could say with sound, maybe the desert spirit's spell was too strong to resist. He didn't make music, he took it's rotting corpse and burned it,smeared the ashes on a cactus and took a picture. He made blues out of oranges and reds, conjured monsters from electricity and wire. No artist made more of an impression on my youthful mind when all that wasn't Top 40 excited me. I picked up Trout Mask Replica, having read it was an "important" record. I didn't even like it but I was drawn to it. It made no sense to me. Up until that point I wanted music to pat my forehead and tell me everything was going to be ok in the most matronly way possible. I needed a soft kiss before the nightmares and Beefheart's music was the fever dream: vivid, disorienting, and impossible to describe to the healthy minds and ears chosen to protect us from the other. Eventually, I came to realize music wasn't the end, it was the means and Don Van Vliet was my greatest teacher.

10.Magma live at Highline Ballroom - even the bourgeois seating plan of that shithole couldn't ruin the waves of Zeuhl beauty flowing from the stage. One of those rare occurences where an artist that arguably peaked over 30 years ago can still write interesting material. I still don't know what the fuck Vander is talking about.

9.Hexbreaker Quintet @ Port D'or - yeah, theyre all buddies but if they sucked I'd tell you. definitely worth the trip to the hinterlands of Brooklyn.

8. Nurture Abuse @ 13 Thames - perfomance was great, but the "West Side Story" like fracas between the early noise show scum and the coked out party fucks swooping in for the late show rave was even better.

7.Northampton Wools @ The Rock Shop - Nace/Moore with the addition of Corsano. Looks good on paper, sounds better in person. Bill and Thurston may be the best gtr combo since Betts/Allman. Corsano proving once again to be one of the best listeners around.

6.Lussuria "Silk and Honey" CS (Hospital) - 20 minutes of dark ambient with one of the best vocal samples ever.

5. Trepaneringsritualen "Septentrional" (Hanson) - sick, twisted industrial blackness from the always reliable Hanson Records. They don't have a porn star in the band so I doubt anyone cares.

4. Sawyer/Yeh/Wooley @ union pool - improv from three of the finest this pathetic city has to offer. this set made me hard and despite me slobbering congratulations all over him everytime we meet, Wooley is still a prick to me.

3. C.Lavender/Ceci Moss @ Triple Canopy - real women doing real noise.

2. Yellow Swans "Going Places" (Type) - yeah, they toned it down somewhat from earlier work but this record is so intricately layered and constructed it hits every sweet spot in my body. the warmest record ive heard in a long time.

1.Mark Mcguire - Please don't lump this guy in with the tidal waves of nu-age garbage that has been rolling through the blogosphere. I've been brought to tears listening to the simple majestic beauty of Mcguire's guitar excursions both live and on record which probably means I'm a giant pussy but fuck it. This isn't some kid fucking around with expensive toys trying to pretend its Berlin in 1977. Totally outside of any trend/genre, Mcguire makes music that will be cherished for years to come while his peers move on to exciting careers as publicists,hedge fund managers and professional vacationers.

Admittedly, I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to the current state of metal. The list of sub-genres is somewhat nauseating but I think we can all agree that Stoner Metal is the deadest of horses. Black Metal has been the rage for quite some time with little tweaks here and there on a tried and true formula. It doesnt matter what the band name is because that BM font on the record is indecipherable anyway. What I've been finding interesting as of late is the infusion of noise and black metal. This communion of bastard sounds is in glorious display on this tape by Terrorism. I don't know anything about this band. From what I can tell we have at least one guitar and drums. The vocals are mostly of the strained, death-knell by a troll under the bridge variety but there are also moments of bass heavy grunts and taunts. Now that I think about it, there may even be some samples on here, adding to the dark disorienting effect of the caveman drumming and "who the fuck knows what they used but it works" sounds."Skyguide" is one of those tapes that is literally impossible to describe and is all the better for it. One of my favorite jams in a long time.

Expo '70 is the main driving improvisational essence of Justin Wright. Expo '70's first album "Animism", which debuted in 2007 on Kill Shaman, is an eclectic mix of krautrock, ambient drone, space exploration and minimal compositions. Comparisons range from Brian Eno, Ash Ra Tempel, A.R. & Machines, SunnO))) and Earth, but not directly sounding like any of those artists in their entirety.

David First:

It seems reasonable to assert that David First has had a rather eclectic musical career. He has played guitar with renowned jazz innovator/pianist Cecil Taylor (culminating in a legendary Carnegie Hall concert) and the rock band Television’s Richard Lloyd. He has created electronic music at Princeton University and led a Mummer’s String Band in bicentennial parades. He has played in raucous, drunken bar bands and in concert halls with classical ensembles. As a composer he has created everything from finely crafted pop songs to long, severely minimalist soundscapes. And his influence on modern music may be incalculable: a 45 single release, The Zipper, by his punk-era rock band, The Notekillers, was cited by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore as one of the songs he played for the rest of the band when they were starting out. Moore recently called it a "mind-blowing instrumental single" in the British rock magazine Mojo.
Known for his dense, mesmerizing drone structures - which he has been experimenting with since his teens - as well as his intense and highly unusual, minimalist approach to the guitar, First has been a pivotal figure in the world of experimental music, releasing recordings on O.O. Discs, Ecstatic Peace and Analysand as well as works on the CRI, Aerial, Homestead, and EMF labels. A recent CD entitled "Dave's Waves - A Sonic Restaurant" - the music from his sound installation of the same name in Lier, Belgium - was the first international release on the highly regarded Italian label ants.

FORMA :

Forma's primary influence is at the intersection of electronic based Krautrock (think early Kraftwerk, Cluster, Popul Vuh) and the explosion of late 70's early 80's underground synthesizer music grouped broadly under the umbrella term "Minimal Synth." They specialize in repetitive yet complex evolving structures of sound, producing a wholly improvised music driven by live drum machine programming, sychronized analog synths and spacious melodies. Forma is Mark Dwinell (Bright, Nonloc) and Sophie Lam on synthesizers and George Bennett on drum machine.

White Out

Free sound mavericks White Out first arose from the subterranean depths of New York's fading meat packing district in the fall of 1995. Their off the wall freak out style quickly established the band as a hurricane force to reckon with.

White Out's core nucleus of Lin Culbertson and Tom Surgal employ a unique array of instruments including: analog synthesizers, cast off effects units, electric autoharp, flute, expanded drum kit, singing bowls, springs, Cambodian shells, temple woodblocks, chains, metal scraps, air tubes, gongs, bells, whistles, etc. These exotic instruments, combined with Culbertson's unearthly treated wordless vocals, work together to forge a singular mysterious sound; an electro-acoustic music which can seem as ancient as it is modern.

Shape-shifting from gig to gig, record to record, White Out never plays the same thing twice. Over the years White Out has cultivated an extended family of accompanists to join them on their sonic odyssey. These guest artists include: Jim O'Rourke, Thurston Moore, Nels Cline, William Winant, and Mike Watt among others.

They have recorded five albums to date. Their latest efforts are SENSO, a live double disk with Jim O'Rourke and Thurston Moore on Moore's Ecstatic Peace label, and Live At No Fun, a collaboration with Carlos Giffoni and C Spencer Yeh on the No Fun label.

NYMPH is a Brooklyn-based psychedelic-shred/avant-garde outfit whose tempestuously transcendent music has been penetrating the New York music scene with bared teeth. Ragas From South India (Folkways Records,1967)

Admittedly, my knowledge of Indian music is cursory at best; derived mostly from secondary sources such as LaMonte Young,Terry Riley,Robbie Basho and latter day raga worshippers like Matt Valentine, Jack Rose and James Blackshaw. Sure I've always had a few Ravi Shankar LPs on the shelf but I've yet to dive head long into that vast sea of microtones.

This LP caught my eye the other day as I was shopping at one of my favorite local spots; Permanent Records here in Brooklyn. Ragas From South India's cover stood out as the photograph boasted two Indian musicians in what I believe to be traditional Indian dress and a sunglasses-clad woman who could have easily passed for Moe Tucker as seen on the back of White Light/White Heat.

It turns out the woman is none other than Dorothy Moskowitz, member of Joe Byrd's United States Of America group whose sole album is a crucial document of forward thinking in rock music. Upon reading the extensive notes in the original LP I discovered Ms.Moskowitz was a student of Ragas of South India's featured vocalist and Gottuvaydyam player Gayathri Rajapur and contributes tamboura with Harihar Rao rounding out the ensemble on percussion.Joe Byrd himself contributes to the liner notes with a very accessible basic explanation of the music, players and instrumentation.

With Pandit Pran Nath being the only other Indian vocalist I've listened to with any regularity I can only say the two vocal pieces are less mystical then those of Nath but no less enveloping. Whereas Nath's work strikes me as somewhat foreboding, Rajapur's voice alternates between tender yearning and pure jubilation. As stunning as the vocal ragas are, it is the second side's instrumental ragas that will transport deep listeners into a state of pure bliss. Ragas From South India is an absolutely perfect record for peaceful mornings and reflective evenings.

I can say with some authority and first hand experience that the sterilization of what passes for the underground within the city limits (most notably McBrooklyn) accelerates each year with the seemingly endless influx of smug, overeducated charlatans playing artist and directing all the bills for their faux-bohemian lifestyle to Oedipal addresses in the suburban wasteland of mediocrity. Northern Cross - Shitty Madrigal (Rare Youth/Louder Than Life,2006)

Northern Cross is the dual guitar noise project by Geoff Mullen and Kris Lapke. I first became aware of Mullen's guitar excursions through his additions to the excellent Invisible Pyramid box set put out a few years ago by Providence based Last Visible Dog records. In addition to introducing me to the beautiful writing of Loren Eisley, that expansive 6 CD document has yielded countless hours of aural bliss with Mullen's contributions being my personal favorites. On that set, Mullen transcended mere Takoma worship with his use of subtle white noise that only enhanced his beautiful acoustic guitar playing. Having followed Mullen's career since then it is evident the man is a restless creative spirit and one of a handful of guitarists who can still keep things interesting.

In Kris Lapke, Mullen has found a perfectly suited foil for guitar based extrapolation. On my first sojourn to Dom Fernow's Hospital Records, I asked him to suggest some warm noise and I walked out with a cassette of Lapke's Furisubi project; a low-end murky howl that has remained a perennial favorite. It turns out Lapke is a frequent collaborator with one of his most recent outings playing guitar with the incredible black metal band Ash Pool.

With Northern Cross Mullen and Lapke create dense clouds of sound with an underlying intricacy lacking in most guitar-based noise music. Having released a handful of tapes on various labels, Northern Cross dropped the down right monolithic Shitty Madrigal a few years back. A collaborative release between Mullen's Rare Youth and Lapke's Louder Than Life imprints, Shitty Madrigal is a three cassette monster bearing no less than 3 hours of jams recorded live to 4-track on three different occasions back in 2006. The liner notes state Lapke is on rhythm and Mullen on lead and while the proceedings will not conjure images of Dickey Betts and Duane Allman, deep listening does indeed reveal a methodical approach to the sound. While this is most definitely noise music, the communication between the two participants is quite intuitive with Lapke laying down a thick bed of sludge while Mullen interjects with furious bursts coupled with some very interesting harmonic counterpoint. Discussing particular sides or moments with such a vast sea of music is nearly impossible with each cassette revealing it's dissonant nuances after a few listens. As with all great noise, there is a great amount of space on Shitty Madrigal for the listener to inhabit. Highly recommended.

I am not a piece of misanthropic record collecting scum. As much as I enjoy envisioning an alternative reality where my floorboards creek beneath the weight of 10,000 pieces of a moving man's worst nightmare, the truth is I am a man of modest means and limited square footage. Having said that, I treasure and worship my LP army and try to draft new members into the ranks as often as possible. Like many other music fanatics with questionable priorities who live in large cities, I belong to one of the most detested and deplorable sub-cultures known to modern man: Record store employees. Cursed with an insatiable hunger for jams of all varieties and a convoluted inferiority complex that develops during a most-likely sexless high school experience, these self appointed bastions of cultural import constitute the majority of my social network for better or worse. Relationships with fellow pushers follow a very familiar arc; beginning with the age-old dance of oneupmanship and eventually plateauing with a spirit of reluctant camaraderie and, for those not too far gone, friendship. If it wasn't for the adversarial nature between the members of this geek tribe, this blog and countless others wouldn't exist and I might have a girlfriend. Let this be a warning to fledgling collectors of the obsolete, original pressings of SBB records won't get you laid.

So, in keeping with the unwritten code of mutually assured destruction between record fiends, I am able to share with you a sweet slice of private press psych folk weirdness from 1978. On loan from the amazingly curated collection of Tropicalia In Furs Dorothy Carter's Waillee Waillee LP on Celeste Records is a startlingly beautiful and weird collection of traditional folk songs and blissed out drones . Carter draws heavily from American and Celtic traditions and utilizes an interesting array of stringed instruments including hammered dulcimer, cello, tamboura, piano, and flute to craft ethereal hymns to nature. The LP's lysergic qualities stem from the confluence of the hypnotic arrangements and Carter's perfectly hazy vocals rather than cheap studio trickery. The record is perfectly sequenced, balancing the haunting narrative pieces and the wood smoked Terry Riley by way of Appalachia instrumentals.

Note: A cursory search resulted in one result of Waillee Waillee being posted in the comments section of another blog with subsequent comments citing the source as one untracked mp3. This is a fresh rip of my own at 320kbps and individually tracked.

ESP-Disk' was formed in NYC and helped to document the thriving avant
garde jazz scene and the fringe rock and folk acts that toiled in the
clubs and coffeehouses of a now-extinct city. Boasting a one of a kind
roster, ESP-Disk' is responsible for the dissemination of some major
works by many of music's great iconoclasts such as Albert Ayler, Sun
Ra, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, The Godz,The Holy Modal Rounders and
a myriad of other acts who sought to expand sonic horizons. ESP-Disk's
discography has become synonymous with forward thinking music,
covering such seemingly disparate genres as psychedelic rock, modern
composition, electronic music, folk and soul as well as their
unequalled stable of free jazz giants.

Sadly, not every musician gets his or her fair due in terms of
monetary compensation. Jazz musicians are disproportionately affected
by the fickle nature of the recording industry and are often
marginalized to the point of utter destitution. The Jazz Foundation of
America's goal is to ensure that those who trade in America's
idiosyncratic art form are able to survive in a musical climate that
honors commerce above artistry. The Jazz Foundation of America has
been fighting to keep jazz and blues musicians from going hungry for
20 years with the help of donations from music lovers around the
world. This weekend the JFA teams up with the newly resurrected
ESP-Disk' Records at the Bowery Poetry Club to celebrate the 45th
Anniversary of the label's formation with all the door proceeds going
to help keep a roof over the head's of America's forgotten artists.

Radiant Husk- Beyond An Endless Swale CS (Bezoar Formations,2009)

Radiant Husk is the work of Matthew Erickson. As one half of the Bay Area duo Sudden Oak, Erickson summons sheets of fire through his saxophone creating an interesting bridge between noise and free jazz. This particular release finds Erickson accompanying himself on keyboards, drums, and electronics. Less claustrophobic than the Sudden Oak releases I've heard, the jams on Beyond An Endless Swale play as some sort of urban meditation ritual. Building on skeletal drones, Erickson's saxophone alternates between soulful cries of beauty and frenzied,dissonant shrieks. One can hear the influence of Brontzman and other European Free Improvisers combined with a love of the deep space created by the first wave of German electronic exploration. Highly recommended.

Peter Michael Hamel - Nada (Celestial Harmonies, 1980)

Peter Michael Hamel is probably best known for his totally righteous Voice of Silence release and his involvement in Between, a progressive unit that issued a couple of interesting records in the early 70's. As a composer and keyboard player, Hamel tapped into the cosmos and became a de-facto leader for the burgeoning New Age genre. A student of Indian raga and the avant garde , Hamel's work is not just pretty electronic music as Nada's second track "Silence", a piece for prepared piano can attest. Nada's highlight is the sidelong "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" : featuring four synthesizers and an electric organ that come together to create deep harmonic space complete with a dizzying bass gurgle and shot through with melodic rays. Highly recommended for fans of Emeralds and the Arbor label.

When you live in an area with a high concentration of art school graduates, trust funders and other assorted blights on society, everyone you know is in a band. On any given night a friend of a friend of someone's aunt or coke dealer has a gig happening and "you should totally come out." Needless to say, the majority of music being made here in the quaint borough of Brooklyn that manages to gain any exposure west of the river is generally either cleverly disguised pop garbage or the tepid work of post-punk grave robbers. Thankfully, among the desecrated ruins of a once thriving artisitic community,there remains bands of sonic warriors who toil in the terrible shadows of the blue blooded condominiums and under the radar of an increasingly homogenized rock club scene.

Source of Yellow ; a Brooklyn trio consisting of bass, drums, sax, and a pletheora of electronics and assorted sound generators are a true beacon of light in the seemingly eternal talentless night that has fallen on the NYC music scene. Combining metronomically precise krautboogie ur-rhythms with walls of textured electronics and sparse inventive sax playing Source of Yellow play music that would have been right at home on both the Brain and ESP-Disk record labels. They are indebted to the great innovators of free music's past without cannibalizing them, blazing a new direction away from the necrophillic tendencies of modern music. They are finishing up an incredible full-length and have given me their blessing to share with you their entire performance at Matchless Bar in Greenpoint from 2009-08-17.

I've recently begun poking around, looking for good black metal. Though there have been a few things that I was into, I quickly realized that the darkness I've been seeking could be found more easily in noise and without the terribly slick production or the operatic stylings of some make-up clad clown from suburbia. I've often used noise as a dulling agent, a curtain to block the light and to keep the ghosts of all pasts at bay. Noise music, at its best, simply won't allow for the attachment of nostalgia or anecdotal recall. Noise exists solely in the province of the moment. Brad Rose and Nathaniel Young's Ajilvsga project has, over the course of numerous tapes and cdrs, created some of the most compelling black hole music ever. Ajilvsga's emissions adhere to the basic tenets of the low-end drone with plenty of mid and upper register synth/guitar action that resonate like some unholy clarion call through the cosmos. Unlike so much dreck being produced in the noise/drone axis these days, Ajilvsga produce dramatic music that never feels contrived or unnatural. This is space music, complete with the sounds of exploding suns, planetary decay and universes colliding.

These dudes rolled through town a few months back and I had the good fortune of seeing them play Cake Shop the evening of Plastic Crimewave's Guitarkestra project(which ruled). Psyched about their majestic moniker and thirsting for some new sound I checked out their myspace page a few days before the show and was treated to some blown out brown-acid type freakouts which provided ample excuse for making it to the gig on time. My memory fails as to whether they were a four or five piece that night, but they definitely had one guitar, a bass, drums, and a singer. For some reason when I see a band with a "lead" singer(not playing any instrument) my palms get sweaty and my mind flashes on terrible Aerosmith-ish flights of cockrock. Of course there are exceptions to the lead singer cringe rule with Rob Tyner and Iggy being the most fitting examples. Well, basically the line-up looked a little thin to create the kind of warped psych dirges that were represented on their myspace page. And true enough, the ensuing set consisted of short blasts of psych-punk fury that can only be brewed in the basement cauldrons of the mid-west. A solid rhythm section kept a feverish pulse while the guitarist alternated between scorched earth riffing and paint peeling leads. The vocals are of the loud unintelligible variety that add a nice layer of texture to the proceedings. I gripped a few tapes at the show(this, and a double on Pizza Night) and the jams are righteous. Final High;5 songs clocking in at 20 minutes, is a rave up of classic garage with just enough fraying at the edges to keep it interesting. The important thing is; beneath the scuzz,there are simple and well written songs. And I love saying their fucking name.

I can't find the tape art online, and I'm too lazy to try and scan it somewhere so this picture of a tree-hugger who tried to sell me mushrooms will have to suffice. Also, there is no info on the tape about who put it out or song titles so if you know something leave a comment.

Grachan Moncur III - "New Africa" (BYG,1969)

It recently occurred to me that I have been neglecting jazz here. It should come as no surprise that my interest lies in the more experimental strains of the genre which generally falls under the categorization of "free jazz". Like many genre signposts it is problematic, limiting and often derided by the branded musicians themselves. We shall leave the discussion of proper nomenclature for another day and instead focus on trombonist Grachan Moncur The Third's "New Africa" record released on the venerated BYG Actuel label in 1969. "New Africa" features other new music stalwarts Dave Burrell on piano, Roscoe Mitchell on alto sax and piccolo, Alan Silva on bass, Andrew Cyrille on drums and the inimitable Archie Shepp(with whom Moncur played extensively) on tenor sax for one cut. Less chaotic than many of the records being produced by the aforementioned players, "New Africa" is a shamelessly pretty exercise in post-Coltrane modal excursion. The title cut,presented in four distinct movements, is as beautiful and spacious a composition you will ever hear with each player turning in fine, if restrained, performances. Side two's appropriately titled "Exploration" shows the group in a more dynamic untethered space using texture atonality and repitition to exhilarating effect."New Africa" is a testament to the breadth of Moncur's compositional skill and the individual player's ability to flourish in any setting. One of the more accessible outings by any of it's individual contributors; this is a great record for trying to get yr girlfriend into some cool shit.

A colleague recently forwarded GA'ANs myspace page to me, and my initial thoughts flashed on Magma being fronted by Dagmar Krause without the political bullshit. Sufficiently impressed by the sample jams, I went and saw these Chicagoans slay the crowd of metal-heads, prog nerds and rock sluts(no shit, it was like a Warrant video) assembled at Death by Audio on Thursday night. GA'AN combines a muscular yet nimble rhythm section, a genuinne synth-wizard and a strong female vocalist to unleash a dark tide of grooves, space and texture. On this particular untitled cassette they wander into some great murk drone territory with gorgeous synth twinkle before blasting into a full rock stomp. The wordless vocals mesh perfectly within the synth zone while the bass and drums dance across time. This is a great fucking tape.

These dudes are on tour, check them out if you can and buy their shit and show some love.

While perusing the racks of used records at one of my local favorites(Permanent Records), I chanced upon this LP. Attracted by it's vaguely Native American/New Age cover and intrigued by the titles of the tracks(Water Music, Active In The Cosmos), I gave it a cursory listen at the listening station and was sufficiently impressed to make a purchase. The liner notes give a brief description of the Arica Institute's philosophy of mind/body relations and goes on to indicate that the music on Sides 1-3 was designed to accompany an Arican excercise known as The Audicion Plantar or "listening with the soles of the feet." Each section of music has a corresponding, possibly neck-breaking tutorial for optimum listening. I quickly learned that laying down with headphones on was a practical method for maximum jam-absorption.

The music is cryptically credited to "The Arica Musicians" who employ hand percussion, piano, voice, electric guitar,saxophone, bass,and vibes to ecstatic effect. Imagine Pharoah Sander's Karma-era band jamming with No Neck Blues Band. Chaotic free skronk yields to gorgeous pastoral passages seamlessly without a soloist's ego in sight. The interplay between the Guitar and Piano on side 2 is positively jaw-dropping while the rhythm runs the voodoo down. The atmosphere of the record leaves little doubt that the pieces were recorded live. Patient listening reveals incredibly nuanced performances even during the discordant freak-outs. Highly Recommended.

It saddens me to report the death of Eat Records...What was once an amazing place to hang out, drink coffee, have a nosh, and peruse through stacks of records has slowly become an Olive Garden for the ugly condo set.. Gone are the days when you could roll up, grab a cup and talk music, art and culture with the like-minded staff and fellow patrons for hours on end. Perhaps it was the introduction of tables and chairs so uncomfortable they had to have been designed to ensure minimum hang time(which I've been told is 100% accurate) or maybe it was the ousting of Douglas Pressman; the salty dawg whose legendary record hunting skills kept the shelves crammed with killer records. Thanks to founder Casey Block, Eat has been the backdrop for the formation of many friendships, musical projects, and ideas that span the globe. Mr.Block's friendly demeanor and musical knowledge assured the adventurous traveller there was always some cool live performance going down at 124 Meserole Ave. In the good old days you never noticed how shitty the coffee was as you were supporting a very unique business that was built on a foundation of love and community. That Eat Records is gone. Over the past year, the record inventory has been cut in half and the wi-fi turned off in a blatant attempt to rid the space of vibe and maximize profit for the Cafe(which is a separate entity from the record store). What remains is just another over-priced cafe in North Brooklyn hoping to capitalize on the influx of money into our neighborhood by offering miniscule renditions of trendy fare. The exorbitant prices discourage whatever struggling artists still remain in the area from dropping by leaving ample room for the nouveau riche and the disgustingly entitled to dine in sterilized bliss

MV & EE with the Golden Road "Sasquatch Creamie"

So, the MV & EE thing has been somewhat problematic for me. Having been a long time fan of the Tower Recordings; the mothership that deployed MV and EE into our sphere of consciousness, I am somewhat surprised at how difficult it has been for me to get on the bus when it comes to the recordings of MV & EE with whatever wandering minstrels happen to constitute the Golden/Bummer/Whatever Road. There are always very good moments on each studio record but they rarely illicit follow up sessions. Being a firm believer in the power of the live electric testimonial, I have ventured to a few lofts/bars/and open fields and bent my ears to recieve the MV & EE gospel always leaving satisfied but not converted. With the exception of a 30 minute instrumental that took place at Free103.9's farm in the Catskills that to this day stands as one of the most revelatory aural experiences of my life, perhaps it was pure (un)luck that I always seemed to hit shows where the jams just didn't gel...Fortunately for all of us, the band was totally hooked up on 2008-11-03 at the Oxfam Cafe in Medford, MA, and the tape was rolling. Part of a seemingly endless deluge of live releases, Sasquatch Creamie is 60 minutes of timeless hazy psych with MV & EE combining the Dead's free rock approach with Crazy Horse's ragged crunch to gloriously lysergic effect. Backed ably by the Golden Road, Matt Valentine's guitar playing takes center stage as it spirals skybound from the front porch like some back-country astronaut. Sasquatch Creamie is a fantastic document of a band that has successfully absorbed 40 years of psychedelic music and are able to put their own cosmic signature on the wall of sound.

Guru Guru "Mani und Seine Freunde" (Atlantic Records,1975)

Let's face it....Bands change. There are thousands of reasons for this, and we need not squander valuable time debating the catalysts for an artist's growth. When it comes to dealing with great music of the past we present-day travellers roam freely between musical epochs, unfettered by the tyranny of time. Now if you witnessed the visceral third-eye psych blues of Guru Guru's original incarntation as a saucer-eyed youth in Deustchland I could somewhat understand the confusion that would come as Mani Neumieier navigated the good ship GG through the burnt sienna hills of 70's fusion. Much like Soft Machine and Pierre Molan's Gong, the Guru Guru unit presented on "Mani und Seine Freunde" is far-removed from the band that recorded the classic "UFO" record both in personnel and intent. What we find on "Mani und Seine Freunde" is the back-end of the trip, with the musical field of vision widened. While by no means a front-to-back classic, "Mani und Seine Freunde" is a great summer record full of polyrhythms, nimble synthesizer and understated guitar. There are a few moments of Zappa-isms (mainly in lyrical content/delivery....Chicken Rock relates the story of a farmer who takes LSD and frees his flock)which are easily ignored and fail to detract from the "I can't believe how funky these Germans are" jams.The majority of the record swims in warm and fairly straight forward jazz-rock waters with the experimentation being limited to the two longer pieces. "From Another World" and "Woodpeckers Dream" utilize field recordings , acoustic guitar and African percussion to ecstatic effect. Despite it's shortcomings, Mani und Seine Freunde is a fine example of 70's fusion that does not rely on instrumental pyrotechnics. Lovingly ripped from my vinyl by Joe the Engineer.

Soft Machine "Bundles" (Harvest Records,1975)

So the general consensus is: post-Wyatt Soft Machine records are prog/fusion noodlefests...So why is that a problem? If yr like me, that fucking rules. By the time "Bundles" was recorded, the only original member was Mike Ratledge, with guitarist Allan Holdsworth joining; bringing his considerable technical prowess without falling into cliche' soulless fret-workouts... Side A opens with the Holdsworth composition Hazard Profile in 5 parts. A blistering onslaught once the needle is dropped, the band's statement of intent is clear: we now have an electric guitarist. Parts 2 and 3 mellow things out with Ratledge's piano in the foreground reminding us all who daddy is. The Hazard Profile ends as it began, in a fiery maelstrom of beautiful jazz rock with jaw dropping synth leads by Mr.Ratledge. Side A concludes on a whisper with Holdsworth's ditty "Gone Sailing." Highlights on the B side include the title track featuring more stratospheric soloing by Holdsworth and the band displaying immaculate ensemble playing through several shorter pieces that flow in and out of each other culminating in the gorgeous atmospheric bliss of "Floating World."

I'm going to begin sharing some of my favorite GD jams on a somewhat regular basis...I host/produce a weekly Dead themed radio show on East Village Radio named Bring Out Your Dead whose purpose is to convert the uninitiated by interpolating GD jams with new and obscure psych/noise/experimental music. Although all are welcome aboard, my target audience are adventurous listeners outside of the patchoulli realm. As Bob Weir once famously remarked: "The biggest problem with Deadheads is they only listen to the Dead"....My own experiences with Deadheads leaves little doubt to the validity of Bobby's claim. I've often regretted not being able to see Jerry and the boys play live, although when I was at show going age the consensus was their best years were far behind them.As an aside; I did have a ticket to see them at MSG in October '94, but my "friend" swindled me out of my ticket in order to bring along someone who was holding more drugs.(FUCK YOU JOSH WINSTON)...So here's to what I'm hoping will be a weekly divergence into the mystical realms of the Grateful Dead.(I will be linking to the Live Music Archive which is the home to over 4,000 live Grateful Dead recordings. The world of live Grateful Dead music is vast and is impenetrable without proper guidance. Widely regarded as one of the Dead's peak performing years, 1972 is a great place for the lysergically challenged to seek entry. A benefit for Chuck Kesey's Creamery, 8/27/72 is a phenomenal show from beginning to end. The first set boasts a sturdy China>Rider, and a great reading of Weir's Black Throated Wind that might convert some Bobby haters. The second set opens with a great spacey Playin' that touches back to earth rock before the reprise. Also appearing in the second set is a stellar Bird Song with the band fully engaged in the group mind space no other band has ever pulled off. As if the first two solid sets were'nt enough to blow minds, the third set begins with the Dead's signature exploration vehicle....Dark Star. Not so much a song, as a spectral blueprint/hologram; Dark Star propels the band into the unknown. This version is one of my favorites, not as weird as the following year's readings would get, but a free rock behemoth nonetheless. Check the great segue into El Paso. Who else could pull that shit offf?

Eternal Tapestry "The Declining Star" CS (Night People)

Hailing from the fertile pastures of Portland, Oregon; Eternal Tapestry have been not-so-quietly breathing fiery life into the underground scene for a couple years now. Taking cues from historical monsters such as Hawkwind, Amon Duul II, and the PSF label ; these gentlemen succeed in creating music that references the past without slavishly imitating it. With each release, Eternal Tapestry refine their heady mix of motorik throb and noisy gristle. "The Declining Star" cassette finds these nomads hurtling toward the center of the sun . Opener "Ascending" hurls out of the gate with a scuzzy dirt riff riding a ferocious teutonic beat. A second guitar joins the fray, adding alternating blasts of white hot melodic fury and artfully sculptured noise. Soon enough the main riff drops out and is replaced with a jaw dropping low octave crunch groove blanketed with a shower of guitar deathrays . The remaining two tracks display a slower, more contemplative side but are no less interesting. The "Declining Star" displays a band of egoless jammers engaged in a conversation with the cosmos.

If you are reading this blog,the chances are Popol Vuh need no introduction. The work of Florian Fricke is required listening for those who worship at the altar of transcendent jams. After abandoning electronic music, Fricke began a new journey to the center of the mind with the use of more traditional instrumentation. Featuring the talents of multi instrumentalist Daniel Fischlescher, Letzte Tage Letzte Nacht is a record of enduring warmth that enevelopes the listener in a beautiful psychotropic mist. More stereotypically "rock" than the records Fricke and company had released previously, Letzte Tage Letzte Nacht retains Fricke's unique sense of melody and harmony.The unsung hero of many of Popol Vuh's finest moments;Daniel Fischlescher's electric guitar weaves a blissful cosmic tapestry with his sun baked tone and delicate phrasing throughout this essential record. Although available on CD, I found the remastering hollow and flat ,so with the help of Joe the Engineer I present to you a superb vinyl rip of the original LP.

My friend Russ Waterhouse(Blues Control,Watersports,WhiteTapes) turned me on to this Florida fuzz crew. These boys make swampy garage murk stretched into oblivion. Every sound is burnt to hell yet the licks remain tasty beneath the heavy coating of sonic ash. Think of Tangerine Dream's first record getting ass raped by the American "Nuggets" box while the "Lysol" era Melvins rub one out in the corner. A must have.

A bit of serendipity surrounds this next piece. I was hanging at a friend's pad, perusing his roommates awesome record collection when the title of this tape caught my eye. "Sounds of the Mothership" I grabbed the tape to discover a beautiful cover depicting a sunset/beach scene complete with three hovering craft above the horizon.The music contained within this nearly thirty year old tape is a gorgeous droney mix of space synths, sitars and various echoed out percussion. The man responsible for this "music for meditation" is a New Zealander named David Parsons. Mr.Parsons has gone on to achieve moderate fame with more subdued sounds but it is "Sounds of the Mothership" that will appeal most to us acid casualties. It turns out this tape was left behind by James from The Skaters and its not too hard to see why he keeps calling my friend to get his tape back. Don't worry brother,yr in safe hands.

I have to thank my good friend Casey for dropping this bomb on me. Casey runs EAT Records in Brooklyn and is always turning me on to incredible jams. People know when they have great music they want to be disseminated to worthy ears, they go to Casey and he will help out. Such is the case with Racco-oo-oon. Casey had picked up some copies of this record to sell at his shop and informed me I needed to check it out. I must admit the band name threw me off as I was thinking it was RATAAATTTbullshit. Upon dropping the needle however, I knew this was no post modern pastiche of pop garbage. Drawing equally from rock, free jazz, and some kind of pagan folk music that may never have existed in the first place, Raccoo-oo-oon deliver one of the most amazing pieces of tribal scuzz fusion these ears have ever heard. Anchored by incredibly nimble yet savage drumming and floated by a spaced out array of piano, guitar, spooked vocals and God knows what else, this record singlehandedly reaffirmed my belief in free music. Released in an obscenely limited run by the venerable Woodsist last year this is a record whose power cannot be observed with a cursory listen. It's a record full of warmth, wide eyed optimism and gentle revelation. I've taken to calling it by a new name "Torch of the Trout Mask at the Gates of Dawn"...Enjoy and find some of their available releases and buy some shit.

The mere mention of yoga brings to my mind the sight of beautiful yuppie broads who would never give a troll like me the time of day traipsing through NYC in their "my workout clothes cost more than your rent" getups with the ubiquitous foam mat peeking from their designer messenger bags. Of course I've come to realize there are physical,emotional,and mental benefits to yoga and you do not have to be trust fund scum to practice it. That being said, I benefit far more from the sound of deep psych improv jams from the pacific northwest. Dark Yoga is the all improvising project of third eye burners Adam Forkner, Honey Owens, Dan Barone, Matt McDowell, and Brian Thackeray. When not jamming with their other equally impressive units(White Rainbow, Jackie-O Motherfucker,Brave Priest, Valet and countless other configurations) these folks get together and lay down some killer blissed out grooves in a secret cave in Portland. Occasionally they venture out into the light to lay waste to hungry freaks with sporadic gigs. Thankfully, the good folks at listener supported KBOO invited Dark Yoga to lay down some jams and the results were released in extremely limited quantities by Yarnlazer. I was lucky enough to get a copy(Thanks Dan) and can not in good conscience not share them with other heads. Enjoy!

For my inaugural post I'd like to share with you a rare major label psych gem. Released by Columbia Records in 1968, Jacobs Creek one and only released album deserves you're acid-riddled attention. Not a blown out fuzz monster by any means, Jacobs Creek trades in well written songs, tight vocal harmonies and the occasional egregious over use of a horn section. Steve Burgh's lead guitar is the definite highlight of the proceedings.
